New Faces of Madison Jazz: Patrick Breiner and Luke Polipnick
On Friday, September 18th, the Madison Music Collective will spotlight two of the most exciting new faces on the Madison area improvised music scene: tenor saxophonist Patrick Breiner and guitarist, composer, and sound designer Luke Polipnick. Both are young and full of ideas, and bring the fresh perspectives that are crucial to development of a thriving creative music scene in our community. The expansive and spiritually inquisitive quality of Mr. Breiner’s style will fit perfectly with that of Mr. Polipnick, whose music’s dark, brooding spaciousness evokes the vast mysterious depths of the Great Plains. They will each perform a solo set and close with a duo performance.
Fans of Mr. Breiner’s work with the New Breed will see a different side of his music in his 9/18/09 solo set. As he does whenever performing in an unaccompanied format, Mr. Breiner inhabits his alter ego, Vartan Mamigonian. He is, after all, not himself when summoning everything from ferocious screams to velvety subtones from his instrument while weaving hypnotically rhythmic melodies. Vartan Mamigonian appears in history and literature as both sinner and saint. Similarly, Breiner's solo works can be tender or abrasive or anywhere in between. In his solo set, Mr. Polipnick will premiere a composition that incorporates a computer-based ambient sound collage assembled from sounds generated by the guitar and manipulated through computer software. These elements will serve as a landscape and springboard for guitar improvisations that use techniques ranging from predetermined to very open non-specified textures.
ARTIST BIOS
Patrick Breiner relocated to Madison from New York City in August 2008, bringing with him what is current from this center of the jazz world. His local following has grown quickly through weekly gigs with the New Breed Quintet at the Cabana Room’s Wednesday night jam sessions and several performances at the 2009 Isthmus Jazz Festival, after which local music critic Dean Robbins wrote:
"I walked in just as Patrick Breiner blew the first blast of the evening: a startling, corkscrewing, unaccompanied improvisation on tenor sax that lasted for minutes without a break. It was an impressive feat... and it served notice that Breiner is a force to be reckoned with." (Isthmus/The Daily Page)
A Baltimore MD native and 2006 graduate of the New School University with a BFA in Jazz Performance, Mr. Breiner is a highly original and versatile musician with a knowledge and appreciation of the past and an urge to take the music of today to the next level. He is a veteran of New York City’s jazz scene and still returns there to gig with groups as varied as renowned drummer Billy Hart's "Academy" band (jazz quintet), NOOK (instrumental/improvisational rock), Bing and Ruth (live ambient music), Basement Magic (jazz trio), and Myk Freedman's Suit and Whistle Sound Band (jazz/folk/circus/klezmer).
While at the New School, Mr. Breiner studied with saxophone greats such as Dave Glasser, Tony Malaby, Rich Perry, and George Garzone and saxophonist/clarinetist Chris Speed. In addition to his regular gig with the New Breed, he plays locally with the Enemy Lines Music Ensemble and fronts a trio of his own.
Mr. Breiner is a master of challenging techniques such as “circular breathing” (which enables him to play unusually lengthy musical phrases without a pause) and “multiphonics” (production of more than one note at a time), and he occasionally intones with his voice through the saxophone as he produces a note, resulting in a sound evocative of Tibetan monks’ chanting. He employs all of these techniques with an overarching musicality. Mr. Breiner can be heard on recordings by Bing and Ruth, NOOK, Jean Rohe, Cosmo D's Sauce, and a CD of his own solo saxophone compositions entitled “Vartan Mamigonian.”
Luke Polipnick moved to Madison earlier this summer from Lincoln, NE after making a name for himself on the Twin Cities creative music scene. Madison listeners got a preview of his talent in an exciting performance he gave here earlier this year as part of a nation-wide tour with renowned Japanese percussionist Tatsuya Nakatani.
A graduate of the University of Nebraska with a BM in music composition, Mr. Polipnick’s compositional aesthetic synthesizes elements of minimal electronica, modern jazz, 20th century classical, and pop music. He hails from Minneapolis, MN, and considers the years he spent there as a freelance guitarist pivotal in his development. He performs regularly in a variety of settings, focusing primarily on non-idiomatic free improvisation, modern jazz, and contemporary electronica.
Mr. Polipnick’s electronic piece, “The Eyes of the Soul Will Never Betray the Truth of Innocence,” received critical acclaim on National Public Radio’s “Fresh Air” and in the Washington Post, and appeared on David Matisyak’s “Telephono” compilation sponsored by the Bemis Arts Center of Omaha. His most recent electro-acoustic composition, “Descriptive Data” was performed at the 2009 Spark Festival of Electronic Arts in Minneapolis.
Mr. Polipnick performed as a solo guitarist at the 2006 Chicago Vision Festival, and as part of the electro-acoustic new music ensemble “Shelf Life” at the 2007 Sonic Circuits Festival in Washington, D.C. He has toured the United States three times, and has played with many notable contemporary improvisers and jazz musicians in dozens of American cities. As a professional jazz guitarist, notable performances include gigs with members of Branford Marsalis’ Grammy-winning quartet, and saxophonist Dave Pietro.
