1/15/09 Gary Alderman

January’s program will feature exciting and historic film footage of performances by some of jazz music’s greatest players. The presentation will be hosted and narrated by Gary Alderman, well known for his WORT Jazz show, “Journey’s Into Jazz”. A tireless supporter of Jazz in our community, he was selected as 2008 Jazz Personality of the year and is familiar to all as an MC for Jazz @ Five and the Isthmus Jazz Festival. Unknown to many is that Gary has compiled a world renowned collection of Jazz records, film, and literature.

For this program, Gary will select the most exciting performances from his archives with a narration that only Gary’s exhaustive knowledge of jazz can provide. This program would be a must see for anyone interested in Jazz history and film.

Gary Alderman is a master-archivist of Jazz music and film. He has hosted his own Jazz show on Madison community radio for over 25 years. In 2008, he was proclaimed “Jazz Personality of the Year”. In 2003, he received the “Jazz Ambassador Award”, in appreciation for his dedication, support, promotion, and love of jazz by Jazz @ 5. He has been an MC for regional festivals, including Jazz @ 5, and the Isthmus Jazz Festival for nearly 10 years. He has contributed to many discographies over the years (for greats Art Tatum, Erroll Garner, Bud Powell, Women in Jazz, and others), and he has also contributed to national TV and radio shows. Alderman runs his own business selling and marketing rare jazz records and literature, which he has done for over 35 years.
