April 16: “Journeys into Jazz – The Videos, Volume II” by Gary Alderman
Gary Alderman returns with his program of jazz videos (including mostly new ones and more jazz vocals) that was first presented on a very cold January day. Those who braved the cold that night say it is definitely a program worth seeing and we are hopeful that April will provide a warmer environment.
According to Alderman, about “Volume II”:
“I have been working very hard on the upcoming video presentation and it should be as good if not even BETTER than last time. I am adding a lot of exciting, rare and meaningful items that will blow people away. Not unlike my radio shows, the more someone knows about jazz, the more they will appreciate what they will be seeing (like Tommy Potter... like who has ever seen Tommy Potter, Bird’s bass player... doing a tribute to Bird, with JJ, Kenny Clark, Howard McGhee, Sonny Stitt??!!!---from 45 years ago off UK TV)!!”
Like January’s show, April's program continues to feature exciting and historic (and often very rare) film footage of performances by some of jazz music's greatest players of the 40’s, 50’s, 60’s and beyond.
The presentation will be hosted and narrated by Gary Alderman, well known for his long-running WORT radio jazz show, "Journey's Into Jazz". A tireless supporter of Jazz in our community, he was selected as 2008 Jazz Personality of the Year by mayoral proclamation. He is familiar to all as an MC for Jazz @ Five and the Isthmus Jazz Festival. Unknown to many is that Gary has compiled a world renowned collection of jazz records, film, and literature. For this program, Gary will select exciting performances from his archives with a narration that only Gary's exhaustive knowledge of jazz can provide. This program would be a must see for anyone interested in jazz history and film.
